All You Need to Know About the Melt Flow Index Tester

Melt Flow Index Tester

The usage of plastic products is extremely prevalent in daily life however, there is a long process that goes behind the making of final plastic products from scratch.

In the initial stages, the polymer granules are melted together to form a shape that can serve as an instrument to the consumer for example, bottles, bowls & many other plastic products. These manufacturers that create such plastic instruments from polymer granules have to assess the melt flow rate of these granules to ensure smooth construction of the end products.

It becomes extremely crucial to precisely evaluate the melt flow index of such polymer granules to ensure the durability of the final product and avoid uncertainties at the final construction stages as they can cause hefty amounts of losses to the manufacturer.

To avoid such an uncertain situation, the Presto Group offers a top-notch lab testing instrument called the melt flow index tester. The instrument is manufactured with precise engineering to determine the flow rate of polymer granules by exerting pressure on elevated temperatures.

The instrument functions in an extremely ergonomic way to aid manufacturers perform testing with absolute facile and avoid all sorts of hassle.

Functioning Module of Melt Flow Index Tester

This lab testing instrument is designed to evaluate testing for different grades of samples (polymer granules) to enable the operator to perform melt flow index tests on variable specimens at once.

To start off the testing procedure, the operator needs to place the specimen within the barrel of the instrument designed precisely for the designated positioning of the sample.

There is a dedicated press tool provided along with the melt flow index tester to eradicate any presence of the air gap present in the barrel for appropriate squeezing and pressure exertion on the sample.

The barrel in which the sample is placed is equipped with dry heaters to elevate the temperatures around the specimen, forcing it to melt by surrendering its solidity to the heat.

The instrument also offers a piston that is a pressure assembly exerting pressure upon the specimen in the barrel with elevated temperatures. The piston is a module setting assembly for different weights. These weights can range from 0.7 kg to 21 kg as per the grade of the polymer granule being tested. The standard weight as per compliance of the designated standards ranges from 1 kg to 5 kg.

The weighed exertion of pressure along with heated temperatures within the barrel due to the piston & heaters respectively, results in the specimen flowing out of the die constructed beneath the barrel.

The melted polymer granules come out of the die in the form of sticks which are uniformly cut by the rotating cutter associated right outside the die, forcing the specimen to fall onto the lab-grade stainless steel circular plate.

After the whole procedure, the operator can simply collect the sample on the stainless steel plate and calculate the melt flow index of the specimen by measuring the melted granules with a formula – grams per 10 minutes.

The instrument is equipped with futuristic features that contribute to accuracy, precision, durability & single-handed testing from the instrument.

Features of Melt Flow Index Tester

The melt flow index tester offers a lot of in-built as well as additional features to aid manufacturers from the polymer as well as the PET & preform industry.

Starting with the in-built features, the instrument is equipped with a microprocessor-based display for accurate derivation of the results and for assisting the operator in simply analyzing the data of the results. The display is very well-complimented with the provision of a preset timer that determines the rotating cutter’s cutting speed as per the requirements of the customer or compliances with considered standards.

The instrument incorporates heaters that can elevate the temperatures up to 400o C, allowing expeditious elevation of the temperature and thus speedy conduction of the tests.

The additional features of the instrument include the provision of a press tool to ensure the complete elimination of the air gap between the piston and the specimen in the barrel.

The instrument is also offered with a stainless steel plate which acts as a mirror, necessary for the cleaning of die. The stainless steel plate is complemented with barrel & die cleaner that ensures the long-term durability of the instrument.

To use the die cleaner & barrel cleaner with maximum efficiency, both of them are provided with the chemical xylene which has powerful cleaning properties. This ensures maximum maintenance of the instrument.

The automatic sample cutting with the help of the rotating cutter is the finest feature, the instrument carries as it makes it extremely easy for the operator to collect the samples and weigh them every 10 minutes for precise recording of data.

The specifications of the lab testing instruments must be considered before you get your hands on the equipment.
