During the testing procedure, the maximum hydrostatic pressure is applied to the specimen of the leather till it is ruptured. The exact burst strength is read on digital indicator. The instrument includes two clamps (upper clamping area has spiral grooves, and lower clamp surface has concentric grooves), and the test sample is positioned between them with sufficient pressure to reduce the slippage.
The bursting strength test can be performed either by manual application of hydraulic pressure or by automatic pneumatic pressure. The maximum strength value determines how much stress or weight a leather material can tolerate before it completely bursts. The result is calculated in terms of kilograms per centimeter.
