Problems Occurred During Corrugated Box Bursting Strength Test

With the rapidly growing demand for cartons and corrugated boxes in the packaging industry, delivering customized boxes has become a norm. With this demand, the need of delivering accurate products for the customers has also increased. Thus, testing several factors of boxes like box compression strength, bursting strength, edge-wise compression strength, and much more has become a necessity. Thus, we at Presto have come up with a high-quality digital bursting strength tester that will help you test the bursting strength of corrugated boxes when hydrostatic force will be applied to the material. This lab testing equipment has been designed to eliminate the problem of poor packaging.

Product damage can occur during shipment, distribution, or storage due to poor packaging. The product might be harmed if the primary and secondary packing is not sturdy enough to withstand the handling circumstances.

As a result, it may arrive at its destination in bad shape. Thus, corrugated box manufacturers need to produce highly efficient boxes while maintaining lower costs. To optimize their corrugated box quality, the manufacturers need to make use of bursting strength tester and various testing equipment so that customers get the best quality products.

While conducting the bursting strength test of corrugated boxes, most of the manufacturers find several issues that may affect the testing results. Therefore, in this blog, we have come up with some of the common issues that may occur during the bursting test and how you can easily overcome these issues.

But, first, let’s discuss a brief about bursting strength and why it is important to be measured.

What is the bursting strength of corrugated boxes?

The bursting strength of corrugated boxes is defined as the ability of a material to withstand stress when subjected to external pressure. Thus, testing this property of corrugated boxes will let you determine their quality.

The Mullen Test, also known as the Bursting Strength Test, determines how resistant the corrugated box walls are when exposed to force or pressure. During this test, a rubber diaphragm is used to apply pressure on the corrugated box's walls until it bursts. Hydraulics is used to inflate the diaphragm, which causes the corrugated board to explode under pressure.

Thus, all corrugated box manufacturers will make use of this quality test to assure that their boxes can withstand the applied pressure. To ease the process of bursting strength calculation, we have come up with one of the most versatile testing equipment known as a bursting strength tester.

Purpose, features, and technical specifications of bursting strength tester

The bursting strength tester designed by the experts at Presto will ideally determine the bursting strength of a variety of materials to study the failure that occurs in them due to a hydrostatic force applied on them at a steadily increasing rate through a rubber diaphragm.

This testing equipment is provided with a cam mechanism that is motor-driven which is used for increasing the fluid displacement on the lower side of the rubber diaphragm at a specified rate. There is a mechanism provided with the equipment that automatically lowers the pressure down and stops the motor automatically when the test cycle is completed. It has a rugged design to provide trouble-free performance for a long time. Thus, by taking this test, you can easily reduce product rejections.

Besides designing the digital model of this lab testing equipment, you will find several other models of this testing instrument like Bursting Strength Tester - Digital Pneumatic, & Bursting Strength Tester Digital Cum Computerized Model with Pneumatic Clamping.

These are the features and technical specifications of a digital bursting strength tester. Now, let us focus on the challenges faced by bursting strength tester manufacturers while conducting this test.

Top 3 challenges faced by manufacturers while conducting bursting strength test

The Presto Digital Bursting Strength Tester is used to determine the bursting strength of paper and paper-board by applying a progressively uniform hydraulic pressure to it. Preparing the specimen for testing and putting it between two circular clamps are also part of the procedure. The specimen is then tightened using the attached geared handle. The handle then applies the rising pressure (hydraulic). The diaphragm is stretched until the specimen bursts. But, while following this procedure of testing, most of the bursting strength manufacturers face various challenges.

Here is the list of challenges:

  • Glycerin leakage in the machine is the major cause that occurs during while conducting the test. The possible cause of this is due to loosening of the lower jaw or busted diaphragm. Thus, if you face this challenge then you must tighten the lower jaw with a tightening wrench or you can even place it in the right position.
  • Sometimes it may happen that the sample will not burst while conducting the test. In this case, you can change the bursting diaphragm with the new one.
  • You are getting unexpected BS/BF values and test results on the load indicator. Thus, you can check the placement of the specimen and place it accurately so as to get precise results.
