Impact Testing Through IZOD or Charpy Test

The impact testing is done to determine the strength or toughness of a material like metals, and plastics, etc. This test can be done by the two main alternates. One is the IZOD test and the second is Charpy Test. Though both the tests follow the same principle, yet they are performed differently.   1. Position of Specimen

The specimen position in both the test methods is different. It is vertical in the IZOD method, whereas horizontal in the case of the Charpy test.

  1. Striking Point

The point of the strike of the hammer in both the test is again different. In the vertical or IZOD method, the hammer strikes on the upper tip of the specimen. On the other hand, in horizontal or Charpy testing, the hammer strikes at the point of the notch but in the opposite direction.

  1. Notch Direction

The notch direction for both techniques is different. In the IZOD test, the notch direction faces the striker which is fastened in a pendulum. While, in the Charpy test, the notch direction is positioned away from the striker.

  1. Types Of Notches

The impact testing is done mainly by two types of notches i.e. U-notch & V-notch. The IZOD testing follows V-notch only, whereas the Charpy test is followed by both U-notch as well as V-notch.

  1. Specimen Dimensions

Even testing the same specimen, the dimension for both the test would be different. For the IZOD test, the dimension for the specimen is 75 x 10 x 10mm. On the other hand, the dimension for the specimen for the Charpy test is 55 x 10 x 10.

  1. Hammer Type

In both tests, a hammer is used as a striker. In the IZOD test, it is a farming hammer whereas the Charpy test is followed by the Ball Pin hammer.
